Hand-woven natural rope stretched over a solid wood frame — a sturdier, more textured cousin to the macramé chair, built the same way seating was built before machines took over: strand by strand, by hand.
This chair is strung the way rope furniture has been made for generations — thick natural cord wound and interlaced across a solid wood frame until the rope itself carries your weight. It sits firmer than a macramé weave and closer to a traditional woven cane or rattan seat, with the rope's own coarse, grounded texture standing in for upholstery.
The wood frame is built to hold the tension the rope puts on it once strung taut, and to keep holding it through daily use. Natural rope softens and settles slightly as it's used, taking on a slight sheen where hands and weight meet it most, without losing the structure that makes it a proper seat rather than a hammock.
Rope and wood together sit across the Plant and Wood elements of the Shaman Kathmandu framework — grown fibre and grown timber, both worked by hand rather than machine. The natural, undyed rope colour is left as it comes, so the chair ages the way raw natural fibre does — warming slightly with light and touch over time.
We source from South Asian artisans who string by hand rather than machine-wind the rope. Each chair is finished and inspected before it ships. Rope tension and the exact weave pattern vary slightly piece to piece — that's the nature of hand-strung work, not a flaw.
A solid, everyday seat with texture — a reading nook, a balcony, an entrance, wherever a sturdy woven chair earns its keep.
Element: Plant & Wood (natural rope strung over a solid wood frame — grown fibre and timber worked by hand) Origin: Hand-strung, South Asia.
Dust with a dry brush or cloth, working into the weave. Spot-clean with a barely damp cloth if needed — avoid soaking the rope. Keep out of prolonged direct sun and away from standing moisture; natural rope can weaken, fray, or discolour with sustained damp. Check rope tension occasionally with regular heavy use and have any loosened sections re-strung by hand rather than pulled tight yourself. Store or use under cover if kept outdoors — this rope is natural fibre, not a weatherproof synthetic.
